Adolescent Literacy

Concordia University's Adolescent Literacy concentration addresses the crisis in adolescent literacy in America's 6th through 12th grade students. Data on reading from the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP, 2009) indicates that nearly seven out of every ten 8th graders (68 percent) are working below the proficient level in reading comprehension. In addition, one out of every four 8th graders read below the basic level and are, therefore, unable to read sufficiently in order to learn from and understand grade-level text. Adolescent literacy is a serious concern in many U.S. schools, and educators are being hired to address the need for directed engagement.
